What Formatly is

Formatly is a catalog of free converters and developer tools that run in this browser. You pick a pair — HEIC to JPG, PNG to WebP, JSON to YAML — or a formatter, drop a file or paste text, and download the result. Nothing is uploaded for conversion. No account is required.

The homepage is a directory, not a second converter. Search finds tools. Trending and sections point at the image hub and the developer hub. Dedicated URLs exist so search engines and humans can open the exact pair with the right title and an explanation of what changes in the file.

Local conversion, not an upload pipeline

Most ‘online converters’ send the file to a server, re-encode it, and give you a download link. That is convenient for the operator and a privacy problem for you. Formatly decodes and encodes on the device that already has the bytes: canvas and browser image decoders for common rasters, WebAssembly for HEIC, in-page parsers for JSON, YAML, and CSV.

You can prove it. Open DevTools, go to Network, convert something. You should not see a POST of the file to a conversion API. You may see HTML and codec scripts; those are code. HEIC’s decoder is loaded when you actually choose a HEIC file, not as an upload of the photo.

What to open first

iPhone photos that Windows or email will not open: HEIC to JPG. Scanned documents and print masters stuck as TIFF: the TIFF converter or TIFF to JPG. Screenshots that need a smaller web file: PNG to WebP. Photos that must grow a transparency channel or stop further JPEG damage: JPG to PNG — knowing that PNG will not undo existing blocks. Logos that email will not accept as SVG: SVG to PNG.

For payloads: JSON Formatter pretty-prints and validates in the tab. JSON to YAML is for humans and Kubernetes-style files. JWT tools decode and encode locally. If you only need the image hub or the developer hub, use those pages instead of hunting the matrix.

Limits worth knowing

Formatly is not a cloud photo library, not a layered editor, and not a PDF-page extractor. PDF is for packing images into a document. HEIC and SVG are decode/rasterize only. Huge TIFFs can hit memory limits. Quality sliders are browser encoders, not a print RIP.

Legal pages are real documents, not placeholders: about, privacy, security, and terms.
